“I’m officially an English Channel swimmer for the second time.” “Today, I swam to France!” Pumphrey excitedly reported to her supporters. Then, on July 29, she got her chance and completed the swim in an epic 13 hours and 44 minutes. Days went by during that time, while Pumphrey, her husband, and her crew patiently waited for all the right conditions to converge. Likewise, Pumphrey had registered for a slot between July 21 to July 25 this summer to attempt her second swim across the Channel. The stretch between late June and the end of September is known as Channel Swimming Season, when the tides and water temperature of the English Channel are most favorable. And just consider this: “Every open-water swimmer has experienced cancelled or altered swims, before or even during the swim,” says your coach Katie Pumphrey, an ultramarathon swimmer who has managed chronic pain since she was a kid-and battled the elements, too-to reach her many accomplishments. Whenever you push past previous limits, think of your body becoming that much more unstoppable, whether you’re dealing with the everywhere-tenderness of fibromyalgia, joint aches of arthritis, or pain of a digestive disease. “So you did a half mile and not a whole mile? That’s still a win.” By doing this training, you developed a stronger sense of ownership of your chronic pain,” Sabala says. “All the hard work and dedication is valuable. Instead, aim to make it a half-mile swim and savor that huge accomplishment. “If you can only do 70 laps or less, you should have some hesitation about doing the one-mile, open-water swim,” says Sabala. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself falling short-say, you only managed to do 70 laps or less and the same happens for this week’s distance swims-consider recalibrating your target swim date or your target distance. Sound familiar? That was the length of last Saturday’s training session, so pat yourself on the back and know that you’re looking good not only for the week ahead but for your ultimate swim goal. “Even if you can do 100 lengths-that’s almost one and half the distance-that’s really good and you should be okay,” he says.
